In the winter issue of the newsletter, the publication of which corresponded to the change in administrations in Washington, I used a political metaphor to mark the transition between the 2000 and 2001 Division 11 Steering Committee. I want to continue that metaphor just a little bit longer and talk about the State of the Division in this issue.
As of April 1, 2001, the division enjoys good health. We have a robust membership and are financially sound. A year ago at the same time, Division 11 had 655 members and this year, it has 666 which makes it eighth in size among the 16 divisions. Those which are larger than 11 include Division 13, Swallowing/Dysphagia (2,250); Division 1, Language Learning and Education (2,243); Division 2, Neurophysiology and Neurogenic Speech and Language Disorders (1,775); Division 16, School-Based Issues (1,491); Division 12, Augmentative and Alternative Communication (1,080); Division 3, Voice and Voice Disorders (832); and Division 4, Fluency Disorders (698). The budget of the division ebbs and flows just like our own personal budgets, but currently, it has the strongest bottom line that it has had in recent history. Thank you to the previous Steering Committee for their sound management and to each of you for your participation and support through your membership.
