The professions of speech-language pathology and audiology have been negatively affected by changes in reimbursement over the past few years. As a result, ASHA established a Focused Initiative on health care reimbursement for 2003. ASHA recognized that there were numerous instances where speech, language, or hearing services were not even offered in private health insurance plans or employer health plans (see http://www.asha.org/about/leadership-projects/national-office/2003_workplan3.htm). As a result, the ASHA Legislative Council passed a resolution for the new focused initiative and the ASHA Executive Board voted to devote ASHA staff and fiscal resources to increasing member understanding, knowledge, skill level, and ongoing communication in the area of reimbursement. There were four major outcomes of the Focused Initiative
