As most of you know, the Society of Hospital Directors has merged their forces with Special Interest Division 11 and formed a Health Care Study Section. Nancy Lefkowitz and Barbara Sonies are the co-coordinators of the study section; Mary Beth Ferguson (St. Paul, MI), Shirley Morgenstein (New Jersey), and Patricia Kerman-Lerner (New York) are members of the section’s steering committee. We plan to communicate with affiliates on a regular basis in a column in the newsletter of Special Interest Division 11. This is our first column. We welcome suggestions and responses to help us meet your needs.
A questionnaire was included in the last Special Interest Division 11 newsletter regarding members' most pressing concerns in health care. The most common response was that there is a need to develop competencies for practitioners in health care settings both across the age span and for multiple populations. This need is also driven by the JCAHO which has mandated that each facility evaluated has an appropriate set of competencies in place for speech-language pathologists.
