Changes to the Medicare program occupy quite a bit of airtime in the general media, and this will likely be an ongoing trend. Keeping current with the changes that impact service delivery, documentation and the bottom line is challenging; however, there are several sources at our disposal.
The ASHA Web site (www.asha.org/members/issues/reimbursement) is a key resource. See Medicare coding rules for SLP s services (2006) and Medicare coding rules for audiology services (2006) under “Coding for Reimbursement.”
Ongoing updates are available by searching for news from ASHA’s Health Care Economics Committee (HCEC). Members of that committee presented a comprehensive review of Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) Codes, reimbursement and related documentation at the 2005 ASHA Convention (Fifer et al., 2005; Swigert, Cornett, Henri, Holland, & Nikjeh, 2005, November; Swigert et al., 2005). The corresponding slide presentations are available at convention.asha.org/2005/ handouts.cfm and selecting presentation numbers 0417, 0551, and 0552. Consider having your clinical and support staff review these presentations. It will promote understanding and compliance with documentation and need for recertification on ongoing treatment plans.
