Cultures vary in their understanding and beliefs about disease, treatment, and disease consequences. Religious and other beliefs play a central role in defining disabilities. Culturally and linguistically diverse individuals do have different views of medicine, illness, impairment, disability, and handicap. What they believe is the cause of their difficulties and how these are treated or whether the impairment should be treated is influenced in large part by culture and the belief system within that culture. African-, Asian-, Hispanic-, and Native-Americans have cultural roots that have influenced their perceptions and definitions of impairments, disabilities, and handicaps. The following is a review of some of the ideologies, beliefs, and concerns of the major cultural groups in the United States. The reader is cautioned not to generalize these characteristics to all members of a particular group because culturally and linguistically diverse populations have great intra-group heterogeneity.
