Supervision in communication disorders is the process of people (supervisors) helping people (speech-language pathologists and audiologists) to help people (clients and primary caregivers) who have problems communicating. Recognition of the importance of supervision has led to an increasing sense of the importance of training in the supervision process, most recently in ASHA’s “Guidelines for the Training, Credentialing, Use, and Supervision of Speech-Language Pathology Assistants.” With a heightened awareness of the importance of supervision in Communication Disorders, there is the potential danger of the emergence of what Jean Anderson referred to as “‘overnight supervisors/… clinicians who are thrust into the role of supervisors without preparation, sometimes without much choice, and nearly always without much role definition from the organization for which they work or within themselves” (Anderson, 1988, p. xiii). Although a number of speech-language pathology and audiology training programs have developed courses in supervision and continuing education workshops about supervision are increasingly common, more institutions and organizations would offer such training if guidelines for it were available. Supervisees, as well as supervisors, benefit from preparation to participate in the supervision process. The natural question arises “What do communication disorders supervisees and supervisors need to be prepared to do in the supervision process?” The answer to that question has always been addressed through education and training programs, whether they are part of preservice academic programs or continuing education options. In today’s society, a viable option is to deliver education and training in communication disorders supervision through cyberspace, or telecommunication systems, as part of the growing distance education movement.
