Telehealth or distance delivery of speech-language pathology and audiology services is a relatively new and potentially powerful means of assessing, treating, monitoring, and educating patients, as well as consulting with others about our patients. The advent of telehealth as a new delivery medium can be traced both to the explosion of technological developments in the past decade, and to decreased access to audiology and speech-language pathology services imposed by reimbursement changes in both the public and private sector. As traditional reimbursement systems are replaced by managed care and Medicare limitations on service access, telehealth may prove to be an expanding market niche for our services. In addition, there is currently renewed focus placed on needs of traditionally underserved rural and remote populations; for these groups telehealth may greatly improve service access.
