Thanks to Division 13 Coordinator Bonnie Martin-Harris, Column Editor Michael Groher, and contributing author Caryn Easterling. We hope you find this information useful in your work setting. About 2 years ago, during a visit to the swallowing center at Froedtert Memorial Lutheran Hospital I met Caryn Easterling, the speech-language pathologist on the dysphagia treatment team. She told me she and a group of speech-language pathologists from the Wisconsin State Speech and Hearing Association had formed a subcommittee to develop an outcomes measure for swallowing. The tool they developed has since been implemented. Their subcommittee is cognizant of the fact that the scale and the data gathered from it are not ideal; however, the scale does represent an organized attempt to provide the field with an approach to looking at dysphagia-related outcomes.
